Today was the opening day of herring season and we missed it because it was snowing
so hard we couldn't see the boats! We did see lots of whales and sea lions eating and
then we watched an eagle's nest for awhile until we couldn't see it anymore because of
the heavy fog that rolled in.
Everyone waiting for the opening signal on the radio...click the picture to make
it larger and see some of the huge fishing boats and processors. In between the
boats there were whales gorging on herring and jumping out of the water.

WOW! I can't wait to see more!
Really neat. I even liked the snow :)
As silly as this may sound, I want to SEE a herring! I mean, I could google it, but it would be cool to see one on here somehow. Challenge? Not for you...
If only you had a slingshot like your brothers, maybe you could hit one when it jumped out of the water!
Laura--hopefully it will clear tomorrow and I can get better pictures. Once they spawn the water will all be white!
Pam--Don't worry, I'll get pictures of a herring for you. I'm always up for a challenge! My daughter received a new fishing pole from her aunt and uncle for her birthday and they have promised to take her out to catch some herring with it.
My brother told me he has watched seagulls eating them whole and they are pretty good sized fish. He said they tip their head back and swallow them down like a penguin does.
Wow, great pics! Spring is looking pretty similar in Ontario right now. I didn't know about Herring season, I'm going to find out more.
blessings,
Niki
I knew you would not let me down!
You take such sensational photos! I am looking forward to seeing more, especially when spring and summer truly arrive.
