REVELING IN THE BEAUTY

We have been blessed with a relatively dry winter; there has been much less rain than
usual and the snow stopped last week. Not that this is a good thing since the paper
reported that the lake where the electricity is produced has low enough levels that
they have had to kick the generators on. We can't control the weather, but we can
enjoy it--right? All of these pictures can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Sunday we gathered part of the clan and went up to one of the local lakes to poke around.
It's a nice hike with nice bridges over beautiful creeks. We (I) didn't realize when I suggested
the trip that the trails would be so icy still, but it was easy to see why when we got there
and started walking. The sun went behind the trees without touching many parts of the trails
that were covered with packed snow. We did meet a lot of people both coming and going
and we even had a smart aleck light a seal bomb ahead of us on the trail. Seal bombs are
used here by fishermen to scare the seals away from the salmon nets. They kind of sound
like a small M-80 if you know what those are. It's always interesting seeing how people
entertain themselves in a small town in the dead of winter.

We got back from the hike and saw low tide and a full moon--I know--let's walk
down to the beach! This is another view of our neighborhood--our house is to the left of
these homes. Sometimes there is so much to look at I don't know which way to turn.

The beach offered many exciting photo opportunities, including these shots of Babcheeks
beachcombing and the plane from Anchorage climbing high into the sky. I have decided
that people in Alaska don't feel temperatures the same as the rest of the population. I am
not a great judge of this, as I am one of those people that is ALWAYS cold. But there were
people out in 20 degrees, at the beach, on the water, barefoot and in T-shirts! It makes a
shiver go down my spine just thinking about it. I'm such a weenie...

ohmygosh I love your pictures! That bridge was constructed in an interesting way with the big logs running under it.
Thanks for sharing :)

Nice shots buddy. Love the beach ones of grandma. That is like a lifetime keepsake for the girls.
You, a weenie? Ha! And here I thought Hallie was my weenie blog friend!

Niki--yes, those bridges are pretty stout! The trails are beautifully maintained too, so the hiking is really enjoyable.

Pam--Thanks! The lighting for these photos was amazing. I missed it tonight, but the moon was just coming out from behind a mountain and it was casting a whitish glow everywhere on the trees.

Yep, I'm a weenie of the worst sort when it comes to cold. For that matter I'm a weenie when it comes to sweltering heat too. Oh dear.
