A WHALE OF A GOOD TIME

This weekend we decided to take the boat out to one of the larger islands to check on a
piece of real estate. The weather was cold but clear and the water was nice and calm for
a short trip.

After only 15 minutes or so on the island the weather changed and it started to get windy
so we headed back. About halfway there we realized we were right smack in the middle of
several feeding humpback whales. The herring are thick right now and everything that eats
them is in a feeding frenzy--whales, eagles, and sea lions are everywhere!

The 2 photos below are courtesy of Tim Shobe and they give you a good idea of how massive
these animals are. At least I thought I realized how massive they are until they were right
next to us in our boat! I wish the video was better, but we all got very excited when we
understood we were right in the middle of them feeding. You can hear my older daughter
and husband arguing because there are laws about how close you are supposed to be to
the whales in a boat, but sometimes you can't control that very well...
