I never could understand why words had to be taken out. I mean, sure, I didn't know a "catkin" was a flower before this post, I had to LOOK IT UP, but there in is the beauty of a dictionary! Do I need to know what a catkin is? Probably not, but it was a word I didn't recognize on the lists. I have no problem with adding words that apply to our modern society. Even in my day to day life I find I am using words that years ago were not in my vocabulary. Some in the "put in" list should have already "been in," such as "alliteration" and such.
Good post!

Oh, and the family picture with the dogs was cute ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3841330690482031444.post-8690823215105408132008-12-09T23:33:00.000-09:002008-12-09T23:33:00.000-09:00I am continually astonished that they take OUT the...I am continually astonished that they take OUT the words that one would have trouble defining in the current cultural context and replace them with a "Duh" word like MP3. "Whitsun" should remain along with "Abbey" and all the rest. What are they thinking (or not)?

I collect old dictionaries . . . and USE them regularly. The Oxford English COMPLETE Dictionary (OED) is my favorite, with the original Webster's a close second. I pooh-pooh these dumbed down lexicons. When my kids learned to read on their own I purchased a grownup dictionary (Oxford American -- no naughty words defined, thank you) and let them soar. They have fabulous vocabularies. No Jr. dictionaries for us.

Great Post! Got my dander up a bit, but sometimes that's good. no complacencies around here. : D

p.s.
my word verification is "ectalism" -- great-sounding "word" for a post about dictionaries.Debbie in CA : )https://www.blogger.com/profile/07473719745707917057noreply@blogger.com
